Technological and Applied Studies (TAS)
Technological and Applied Studies (TAS) is a key part of the curriculum for students in Year 7 and Year 8, where it is mandatory. Beyond this, students have the opportunity to select from a diverse range of elective TAS subjects to further explore their interests and skills.
In TAS, students develop their knowledge, understanding, and skills through a design and production process. This involves the use of various tools, materials, and techniques across both theoretical and practical lessons. The hands-on approach helps students engage creatively and critically with technology and design challenges.
The technology learning continuum across NSW schools is structured as follows:
- Mandatory learning from Kindergarten to Year 8: Delivered through the Science and Technology K-6 syllabus and the Technology Mandatory Years 7-8 syllabus, ensuring foundational knowledge and skills development.
- Progressive skill development: Students build increasing sophistication in applying knowledge, skills, and understanding to design and produce real-world solutions.
- Optional specialisation in high school: From Year 9 onward, students can specialise in technological fields through elective syllabuses that focus on particular technologies and aspects of design, enabling deeper learning and career pathway exploration.
This structured approach prepares students with practical and theoretical capabilities for future study and employment in technological and design-related areas.
