English

English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12, focusing on spoken, written, and visual texts that grow in complexity over time. Proficiency in English develops confident communicators, critical thinkers, lifelong learners, and active Australian citizens, supporting their intellectual, social, and emotional growth.

The study encourages a love of literature and learning, fostering skills in expression, collaboration, independence, and reflection. At Tenterfield High School, the English Faculty values literature’s role in broadening students’ worldviews and critical engagement, essential across all disciplines.

We emphasise literacy skills and language’s role in meaning, aiming to cultivate lifelong learners who express themselves creatively. Our faculty is committed to engaging, challenging, and future-focused curriculum, using technology to support success in the 21st century.

English Course for Year 7 – 10 (Stage 4 and 5)

The English curriculum at provides students with the opportunity to engage with, and respond to, a wealth of classic, contemporary and digital texts. Students develop their skills of analysis and ability to engage critically with texts, as well as respond creatively and imaginatively. Working collegially and cooperatively with others is also a focus and developed through our CBL projects.

Our teaching programs provide a wealth of opportunities for students to engage with quality literature that explores a variety of genres, contexts and forms. These programs differentiate learning experiences and draw on future focused learning strategies to engage students in the English syllabus.

We teach explicit writing and responding structures to support student engagement. Our Year 7 to 10 programs build skills to prepare students for senior years and beyond.

English Courses for Year 11 – 12 (Stage 6)
